Why WhatsApp beats email for order and delivery notifications

20 October 2026 · WAGate team

Every online shop sends the same three messages: order received, order shipped, order delivered. Most send them by email, and most of those emails are never opened. The customer finds out the parcel arrived when they trip over it.

The attention gap

Email is where people batch-process once or twice a day. WhatsApp is where they look every few minutes. Industry surveys consistently put WhatsApp open rates well above 90% within an hour, against 20–30% for transactional email over a whole day. For a notice whose entire value is being seen now, that gap is decisive.

It also changes the shape of support. When a shipping update lands in WhatsApp, the customer can reply “can you leave it with the neighbour?” in the same thread. With email they open a ticket, or call, or give up.

What to send on WhatsApp (and what not to)

  • Yes: order confirmation, payment received, dispatched with tracking link, out for delivery, delivered (with a photo), booking reminders, password/OTP codes, invoice due reminders.
  • Carefully: abandoned-cart nudges — one, polite, to people who gave you their number for exactly this.
  • No: newsletters, promotions to purchased lists, anything the recipient did not ask for. That is spam on any channel, and on WhatsApp it gets your number blocked.

Keep email as the record

WhatsApp is the nudge; email is the archive. Keep sending the receipt by email for the customer's records and send the moment-of-truth updates to WhatsApp. Customers get the best of both, and your support inbox gets quieter.

Wiring it up

With WAGate the shipped notification is one request from your order-status hook:

POST /v1/messages
X-API-Key: wg_…
{ "to": "61412345678",
  "text": "Hi Sam, order #1042 is on its way! Track it here: https://…",
  "reference": "order-1042-shipped" }

Pass your own reference so you can match delivery reports back to the order later. For WooCommerce and WHMCS you don't even need code — a plugin with your API key does it.
